Sword x Staff Mage Build: Water Assault, Sorcerer vs Sage

Role

Mage is the “Staff” starting class: core stats Speed, Crit and Elemental Attack. Boltray’s site splits the Mage branches into “a ranged spellcaster who heals, controls and summons” (Sage side) and “a master of destructive AoE magic” (Sorcerer side). Early solo damage is lower than Warrior — which is why many players open Warrior — but Sorcerer from T2 is the fastest farmer in the game and Sage is mandatory for guild content.

Launch skill targets

The EOG reroll guide names the Mage opener set; swordxstaff.wiki’s skill database is still Warrior-only, so treat these as single-source until you see them in-game:

  • Water Assault — wide multi-hit AoE with Water synergy; the closest thing to a must-pull on the Mage roll.
  • Water to Ice (charm) — pairs directly with Water Assault.
  • Gale Shield — best early protection; Sorcerer later replaces it with Void Bubble.
  • Mana Surge — general Crit passive that survives a later Sage swap.
  • Skip chasing single-target Mage skills (Fireball, Frost Spear) — placeholders that the T2 pool replaces.

Stat priority

Elemental Mastery converts at 40 points = +1% elemental damage. Community order for the Sorcerer path at early T2: Elemental Mastery and ATK% before low-roll Crit, leaning on the Accuracy trait; long-term Speed › Crit Rate › Crit Damage › Elemental Mastery › ATK. For the Sage path: healing output, HP, cooldown reduction.

Community caveat: Sage’s Summoner and pure-Healer builds are described as not viable in the current global patch — the Dark build is the one in use. Next: Sorcerer build, Sage build, classes guide.
